Yes, there ARE tiny house communities forming in the USA!

I’m surprised by the responses on Facebook to my posting about the survey from Smart Communities in Ontario, by people who think such things aren’t happening in America. The Ontario community is the 9th one listed on our home page.

  • The first community on our web site is Tiny Texas Houses. It’s a bit of a secret – the web site doesn’t show the village – but there are several completed houses and more being built. You can see for yourself when you come to the tiny house fair in October.
  • There are 2 others in a similar stage as the Ontario community, where you can help with the formation: SoFair Farms and another which I removed from this post, due to a report of some questionable practices. Learn more here.
  • There are 3 ecovillages that accept tiny houses and bigger homes: Headwaters Garden and Learning Center, High Cove, and Highland Lake Cove.
  • There is a community being formed by Jay Shafer, still in the planning stages, featuring homes from Four Lights Houses.
  • And there is Boneyard Studios, which is more of a showcase than a community, since full time living isn’t permitted, and I don’t think they are accepting any new homes.
  • In addition there is College Park Village, where my tiny house is. I didn’t list it as a community because it’s a section of an RV park, but it is a tiny cluster of tiny homes (one now, another to join a couple of weeks, and room for more to follow).

If none of these are in a good location for you, start your own!
You’ll learn all you need to know at the tiny house fair!

Learn the best ways to form a community from an expert, Ma’ikwe Schaub Ludwig, the executive director of Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. In addition, you’ll hear more from tiny house community founders Tom Greene (SoFair Farms), Jay Shafer (Four Lights Houses) and Brad Kittel (Tiny Texas Houses). Tom Greene will also offer advise on how to purchase real estate, and attorney Elizabeth Roberts will share her expertise on zoning.

No excuses! Be the change you want to see!
